Jean de Botton – La foret et le roi des aulnes
Jean de Botton (1895-1978)
‘La foret et le roi des aulnes,’ 1940
Derived from the Goethe’s famous ballad of 1782, the painting depicts the figure of a horseman dwarfed by the towering trees of the forest of the king of the elves. A noted illustrator, de Botton may have intended this to be used to illustrate an edition of Goethe’s poem.
